Jason Urick (of WZT Hearts) is yet another product of Baltimore’s unstoppable and multifarious experimental scene that produced musicians like Entrance, Ecstatic Sunshine, Dan Deacon, Beach House and Cass McCombs. Signed to Thrill Jockey (the label that brought you Tortoise, David Byrne, Boredoms, Oval and many more), Urick creates a hypnotic strand of looped ambient dub. It’s intelligent, subtle and slow-developing, sounding …like the eroded and cut up remains of some hit dance track, yet still retaining a simplicity and pleasantness of rhythm to make you actually want to move your body and sway.
“…reminiscent of Jim O’Rourke’s more avant-garde leanings…” – Boomkat

“It’s superb stuff… To instil mind expansion-type vibes whilst actually being genuinely enjoyable is not an easy task.” – 8 out of 10. Drowned In Sound

The following is a statement from Steven Moore, one of the owners of Hyem:

For those who have or haven’t read the Chronicle article in yesterday’s edition, this is in response. After several phone calls, the Chronicle have admitted that printing the article was unfair. This is due to the zero rating being done prior to our take over and actually when it was called Echo for those who remember those days. We have spent, since taking on the lease, over £5K on works to kitchen alone, along with other things. The Chronicle are now printing a retraction and appology in tonight’s paper (how big this will be remains to be seen) but can only hope this rectifys the situation. Please have a read of what I sent to the chronicle yesterday:

“Myself, my brother (Richard Moore) and mother (Jackie Moore) have recently taken over the lease to this business with great expense. However with nearly 50 years experience within the leisure industry between us believe that we can make this a success and a strength to the community.

Unfortunately when taking over a business we have inherited a zero rating within the kitchen area, however have made leaping improvements to this since the take over, including;

* Meeting with EHO officials to discuss what improvements needed to be made and meeting every criteria.
* Stripping all Kitchen flooring and bench work, cleaning and laying new flooring and benchwork.
* Undergoing full deep cleans on all equiptment remaining in the business.
* Purchasing new fridge freezers to bring to standard.
* Ensured the ‘betterfood safety food doccument provided by the EHO is fully completed and all employees are trained on this before working in the kitchen.
* Food preparation and storage has full operational procedures, are adheared by and are inspected on a regular basis.

Whilst I will agree that standards before our take-over were not to standard, we have worked hard with EHO to make all necessary improvements. I would not have my family come to the business for Sunday roast if it was not to standard. We are due a full inspection from EHO and would only wish that they could have done this earlier to avoid this whole situation, but I can understand that these are only done yearly.

Since taking over the business we have also:

* Worked hard to create the upstairs as a live music venue, attracting such artists as Neil Buchanan from art attack with his band Marseille and Blaze Bayley (Former singer of Iron Maiden).
* Worked strongly with Charles Street Community Centre, providing them with free space for an art gallery for local artists and various performing events.
* Now working with Oxjam for their fund raising event on the 9th of October.

We are wanting not only to create a job for ourselfs but be very much part of Newcastle and Heaton community.

I hope that this will ease your minds and will not deter you from enjoying our food as we strive to meet the highest standards.

As for the Chronicle article this will have done great damage to our business and ask that if you feel right, please forward this to as many people as possible.

WHAT THE PAPERS PRINT IS NOT ALWAYS TRUE!”

For anyone involved in the local music scene, September sees a fantastic opportunity to get information on attending Midem and SXSW, as part of an event hosted by music development agency, Generator.

Damian Baetens, Business Development Director, said: “This event is a great opportunity for bands and businesses from the North East to find out about the world’s largest music conferences. It gives a chance to hear from representatives from both SxSW and MIDEM who can help identify what’s available to people from the region and how to take advantage of what is on offer.

“The advice offered at this briefing is essential to anybody thinking of attending either MIDEM or SxSW and will allow people to pose their questions direct to Una Johnson (SXSW), Javier Lopez (MIDEM) and Phil Patterson (UK Trade and Investment). We’re pleased to be working with UKTI in bringing this briefing to the region as part of our musician and music business support activities.”

Midem which takes place in Cannes in January, ‘brings together the music industry’s influencers and decision makers from across the globe’. With around 7,000 delegates attending from over 70 countries it provides a fantastic opportunity to network, discuss industry trends and discover new music.

SXSW takes place in March and next year celebrates 25 years of the conference. Combining the day time Trade Show and the evening showcases – musical acts from around the globe on over eighty stages in downtown Austin – this offers attendees a unique opportunity to mix business with pleasure.

The event at Northern Stage will also see Generator outline their forthcoming plans and offer advice to attendees on how to get involved and make the most of the advice and experience provided by the agency.

Tickets for the event at Northern Stage (Stage 2) on September 1st are free but must be booked in advance by emailing bob@generator.org.uk or by calling 0191 255 4468. The event runs from 12:30-3:30pm.

Korine’s directorial debut and a cult film following the success of his writing in Larry Clark’s controversial KIDS. Also starring Chloe Sevigny (and Rosario Dawon), GUMMO is a series of seemingly unrelated vignettes depicting the hopeless, nihilistic lives of the residents of a small Ohio town, Xenia, previously stricken by a tornado. A “white trash nightmare” full of ultra-dark realism and positively demented humanism, GUMMO is enthralling and disturbed.

The second screening in our HARMONY KORINE RETROSPECTIVE:http://www.starandshadow.org.uk/on/season/75

Written by Korine in collaboration with his brother Avi, MISTER LONELY follows a young American (Diego Luna) living in Paris and working as a Michael Jackson lookalike. He meets Marilyn Monroe (Samantha Morton), who invites him to her commune in Scotland, where she lives with Charlie Chaplin and her daughter, Shirley Temple. Also featuring a parallel story starring Werner Herzog (who also called Korine “the saviour of American cinema”) and nuns falling from planes (?) soundtracked by Spacemen 3 and Sun City Girls.

If you expect the norm here, then expect disappointment. Expect something different and find a bold little film that is thought-provoking, amusing and, eventually, very eloquent. Fans of early Korine like GUMMO for instance will be pleasantly surprised by the sincerity and weird poignancy that breaks through all the meta and perhaps uncharacteristically clear visual style.

8pm – Wednesday, 8th September at the Star and Shadow Cinema
£5 advance / £6 on the door. Advance tickets available here: http://kathbloom.eventbrite.com/

Kath Bloom (http://www.myspace.com/kathbloomchapter) is some kind of legend, she comes from a special place where country, blues and folk are made beautifully translucent and emotive. Highly regarded but a bit of a mystery. The Connecticut based singer/songwriter has a special gift – her almost supernaturally beautiful, wavering soprano is one that has to be heard.

Kath made some very very limited edition albums in the 70’s and 80’s with the amazingly (and equally dreamlike) guitarist Loren Mazzacane Connors, full of songs that float and melt into the ether. Impossibly beautiful. Just as she was starting to write and release CD-R’s again a couple of decades later, Richard Linklater decided to use her song ‘Come Here’ in his 1995 film ‘Before Sunrise’. Slowly her old recordings and new material have been seeping back into the world. This included a special tribute album by artists such as Josephine Foster, Bill Callahan, Devendra Banhart, Mark Kozelek and Scout Niblet.

?One of the most beautiful singers ever. Heartbreaking.—Devendra Banhart

?A supremely intuitive singer and songwriter . . . . gracefully lilting melodies—Stephen Deusner, Pitchfork

“Kath’s voice is urgent and yet calming – a call of reckoning—Nat Hentoff

Star & Shadow has the Newcastle premier of provoc/auteur Harmony Korine’s TRASH HUMPERS. His latest feature is an excoriating attack on the American Dream that kicks off our Korine retrospective season from September 2nd~16th.
A lo-fi production of white-heat intensity, Korine calls it, “a new type of horror; palpable and raw.” TRASH HUMPERS follows a small gang of sinister ‘elderly’ peeping toms through the shadows of a nightmarishly familiar suburban landscape. Their shocking and sociopathic behaviour makes for unbearably compelling viewing that scorches itself onto the mind’s eye. Challenging and myth-drenched, TRASH HUMPERS is shot entirely in thick and grainy VHS and garnered some hilarious attention at recent film festivals for it’s contentions and heavily transgressive approach.

REVIEWS

‘It’s a fearless soul that makes a film like Trash Humpers’- LITTLE WHITE LIES

“Harmony Korine, a once fashionable indie figure whose star fell after early success with Kids and Gummo, is once again showing some spark: a gadfly who annoys and provokes.” – THE GUARDIAN
